How to Prevent Mosquito Bites

Posted By TipNut On June 15, 2007 @ 6:32 am In Beauty & Health 64 Comments <http://tipnut.com/how-to-prevent-mosquito-bites/print/#comments_controls>

As promised from yesterday’s post for How To Stop Mosquito Bites Itching <http://tipnut.com/over-40-mosquito-bite-itch-relief-tips/> [1], I’ve compiled a big list of recommendations and home remedies for mosquito repellent suggestions. A few things to note first:

  • You pretty much have to stop breathing to not attract the attention of a mosquito, a big attractor for them is the carbon dioxide from your breathing.
  • It also seems mosquitoes are attracted by scents like perfumes, sweat, body odor as well as body heat. Unless you stop using shampoos, soaps, deodorants and detergents–it’s hard to be scent free.
  • From what I understand, DEET has proven to be the most effective mosquito repellent. DEET is pretty crazy stuff though, so if you’d like to try less harsh solutions, there are plenty of tips below for you to give a shot.

Something to keep in mind: Since some people seem to be a mosquito magnet while others around them don’t get a single bite, I have the suspicion that there could be a personal body chemistry factor involved. And that could explain why a remedy that works for one person, may not work for another.

I suspect that’s why some people swear by the Bounce sheet method, or the Avon Skin So Soft solution, while others have a different experience. Bounce nor the Avon SSS did a thing for me btw, but I did include them in the list below. I know a few people who SWEAR by them.

Basics for Mosquito Bite Prevention

  • Wear light colored clothing, mosquitoes are attracted to dark clothes
  • Keep your body covered as much as possible (including wearing a hat), although mosquitoes can find their way through the fabric–it does cut down on bites

Mosquito Bite Prevention Home Remedies & Tips

  • Vanilla Extract: A few different recommendations for this one, each contradicting the other. Some say to dab Vanilla Extract on your pulse points, others say to rub it all over your skin & dab your clothes. Some say the cheap stuff is what you have to use, others say the real, pure Vanilla is the only thing that will work. Some say to apply it full strength, others say you can dilute it with water and spray it on. Play around with Vanilla to see what gives you best results–there are plenty of believers for this one as a mosquito deterrent so I think there’s something to it. (Note if this works what a great natural cure and smell good too!)
  • Garlic: This isn’t a favorite thing to do day-to-day, but if you’re going camping or hiking through heavily mosquito infested areas, try a garlic powder and water paste. Apply to pulse points, behind knees, on shoes and ankles and a dab or two on your cheeks or somewhere on your face and neck. Remember–keep out of eyes. And maybe stay out of public places too ;).
  • Essential Oils: Mix choice of essential oils with rubbing alcohol, or witch hazel, or distilled water and spritz on body or directly on cloth to rub on body (shake before each use). Or add a few drops in baby oil or olive oil then rub on skin. You can also apply drops along a strip of fabric (cotton) and tie around wrist. *Make sure to avoid mouth and eye areas when using essential oils.
  • Citronella oil
  • Lavender oil
  • Catnip oil
  • Eucalyptus oil
  • Pennyroyal oil *Seems to be strongly recommended
  • Tansy oil *Seems to be strongly recommended
  • Basil oil
  • Thyme oil
  • Cedar oil
  • Tea Tree oil
  • Peppermint oil
  • Lemongrass oil

Plants That Repel Mosquitoes
Break off leaves and crush them roughly, rub them all over your clothes and skin. Toss the bruised leaves around the perimeter of your deck or patio. Also plant these in pots and arrange them around the patio. You could also infuse these in water and then use that as a spray.

  • Citronella
  • Lavender
  • Basil
  • Catnip
  • Pennyroyal
  • Tansy
  • Marigolds

Commercial Products That Repel Mosquitoes
*(other than DEET items)

  • Avon’s Skin So Soft (straight or mix 50/50 with rubbing alcohol)
  • Bounce Sheets (hanging out of a pocket or waistband)
  • Listerine (mixed 50/50 with household vinegar then sprayed all over body)
  • Vicks VapoRub
  • You can purchase citronella torches to stand in the ground or set on table tops

Household Hack

  • Spray garlic powder and water all over the yard and bushes. Use a fertilizer hose attachment. Will need to be done bi-weekly (approx) or after a heavy rain.

Items to Eat
*Daily

Apparently the smell that comes out of your pores from a steady diet of the below deters mosquitoes. The items aren’t meant to be combined, they’re just different suggestions.

  • Garlic
  • B1 Vitamins
  • Brewers Yeast
  • Lemons

The Yarrow Plant Good For Fighting The Flu.

I recently had a conversation with a R.N. She had been collecting books on herbal remedies for a long time; however she had never really tried any of the remedies.
One summer she ran across a Yarrow plant for sale at an herb store and bought it, she transplanted it into a big pot. In due time it became a very large plant and it bloomed. She kept the flowers and dried them and really didn’t know what she was going to do with them.
The following winter she came home from her job at the hospital with a bad case of flu. She remembered that she had read about making a tea from the Yarrow plant to cure colds and flu. She made the tea, climbed into a hot bath and sipped the tea. After drinking the tea she rinsed off in cool water put on some warm pj’s and went to bed. The very next day she was able to go to work and felt fine, while her many of her working companions were miserable for many days.
It’s very interesting how many native plants have healing properties as well as providing beauty to the landscape. One might begin to believe Mother Nature knows what she is doing if left to her own devices and allowed to flourish in her natural state.

Natural Bee and Wasp Sting Remedy

Natural bee sting remedy and wasp sting remedy. "Bee prepared" with knowledge.
Here is what I recommend for a natural bee sting remedy and wasp sting remedy.
For most of us, bee stings aren’t a big deal. However, for some they are fatal. Seek IMMEDIATE medical attention of the person’s tongue swells, has difficultly breathing, you observe a sudden rash, or the person complains of nausea or blurred vision.
If a person is allergic, make sure you check to see if they have a special “pen” that injects epinephrine. It helps dilate their airways.
Basically you have three things to do for most people when they get a sting...
Extract the sting
Cleans the wound
Find relief
My ALL TIME FAVORITE bee sting remedy and wasp sting remedy that works like a charm.
Here is one of those natural home remedies that I said “yeah, right!” the first time I heard it. But, after 15 years of using this remedy on myself and others, I swear by it.
Believe it or not, the answer is all around you.
The plant is plantain. (Plantago major (broad leaf) and Plantago lanceolata (long leafed or English plantain) ) This is a common “weed” found anywhere where soil has been disturbed. You’ll recognize it growing in the cracks of your neighborhood sidewalks.

This free video eBook has a lesson on using plantain. How to identify it, pick it, as well as use it. You also learn how to build your own herbal apothecary.
How to use this effective natural bee sting remedy:
Pick a few leaves of plantain from a clean source. Try to gather it away from the side of the road. Also away from places where chemicals are sprayed. HOWEVER, it an emergency, you get it where you can get it.
Chew the leaves up real good keeping the plant matter and saliva in the FRONT of your mouth.
Spit it out on to your bee or wasp sting site.
Hold it on the sting site for a few minutes until you feel relief. Repeat if necessary.
Plantain is well known to have amazing drawing power. Broad leaf plantain is preferred, but if all you can find if long leaf plantain, then that works too. Plantain also cleans and provides relief.
Last summer, at Wilderness Awareness School’s summer camps, a young camper got over 60 yellow jack stings when she stepped on a nest. Our instructors applied plantain. After camp that day, she felt fine and even went out for ice cream. She was back in action the next day!
Plantain works for cut and scrapes too!
You can also use plantain in the same way if you get a cut or scrape when you are out side without your travel first aid kit.
Kitchen remedies
Baking soda: mix the baking soda with vinegar and apply the thick paste to the wound.
Onions: Lay a fresh slice of onion on the sting.
Apple Cider Viegar: The raw kind. Spectrum or Braggs are good brands, available at all health food stores. If bitten or stung, dab apple cider vinegar as soon as possible on the bite to draw out any poison and to prevent swelling. Thyme and rosemary infused in the vinegar are especially effective. To learn how to make infused vinegars, check out Roots and Branches.
Homeopathic remedy
Apis: Take 4 pellets under the tongue. Let them dissolve. Homeopathics work great for first aid situations.

American Society of Clinical Oncologists Endorses use of Natural Remedies

American Society of Clinical Oncologists Report Endorses use of Natural Remedies
As the worldwide acceptance of alternative medicine increases, so does the number of Americans taking the responsibility of personal health into their own hands. Studies conducted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) reveal that more than thirty-six percent of Americans are using complementary and alternative medicine to help treat and prevent disease and enhance their quality of life.
Natural remedies are an essential component of alternative medicine, with more than 5 billion out-of-pocket dollars spent each year on herbal products in the United States alone, according to national surveys conducted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. As the use of natural remedies becomes more widespread and accepted by the general population, they have gained increasing respect from the medical community as well.
Recently, the American Society of Clinical Oncologists released a report regarding the use of natural remedies as complementary treatments for cancer patients. This important report centered around two commonly used natural herbal supplements, Ginseng and Flaxseed, and the results were overwhelmingly positive.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, one of the leading and most well-respected medical authorities in the world, performed a study on Ginseng to determine its effectiveness as a remedy for fatigue in those battling cancer. Ginseng has traditionally been used as an energy booster, which is often a significant issue for those struggling with the energy loss that accompanies cancer, as well as the draining effects of chemotherapy.
The results, which have yet to be released formally, showed that patients taking 1000 milligrams of Ginseng per day experienced moderate to very much improved energy levels. These results are very important, as they further validate the approach of complementary treatment using natural and herbal remedies.
Fatigue is a major side effect of cancer treatment, and by using herbal remedies that can remedy this side effect, it allows for a more complete and effective treatment that not only fights disease, but promotes overall well-being, which is a vital factor in both physical and psychological recovery.
There are many natural remedies available that not only fight fatigue as Ginseng does, but also work to promote the body’s overall vitality and health to aid in its recovery from a wide variety of illnesses, not just cancer!
Natural Products for Vitality, Energy and Organ Health
Herbal products that strengthen the immune system, detoxifying herbs that cleanse the system of buildups of prescription medication and remedies that promote systemic health all act as excellent complements to traditional treatments and in many cases, when combined in properly compounded dosages, as effective primary treatments.
Fatigue Fighter helps maintain energy levels and feelings of well being, overall systemic and immune functioning.
Detox Drops help maintain stable, normal sugar levels and acts as a detoxification tonic for the liver and pancreas.
AdrenoBoost helps protect adrenal glands from the damaging effects of stress to maintain healthy functioning.
ImmunityPlus promotes healthy immune system functioning and helps fight viral and bacterial infections.
Kidney Dr. promotes kidney and urinary system health and functioning
Liver Dr. promotes healthy liver functioning, resistance to toxin/disease damage and systemic health.
A second study performed by experts at Duke University, sought to investigate the effects of Flaxseed on tumor growth in the prostate. Flaxseed has long been taken as a supplement for its high concentration of Omega-3’s, the fatty acid associated with lower risks of certain cancers and heart disease.
Men were administered three tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily, and then after surgery, the rate of growth of their tumors was compared to a group of men who took no supplements. The study showed that the cancer cells in the tumors of the men who took flaxseed were dividing at a much slower rate than those who did not take the supplement.
The outstanding results of these studies show that flaxseed can actually play a direct role in inhibiting the growth of cancer cells, which speaks volumes about its potential as both a preventative supplement and a complementary treatment.

Please note that cancer of the prostate in not the same as other prostate ailments such as BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) or prostatitis, both of which can be effectively and naturally addressed by using herbs found in Native Remedies Prostate Dr. , such as Saw Palmetto and Epilobium Parviflorum.

There are many natural remedies that contain Omega-3’s and can help to provide the same benefits as Flaxseed, whether it’s restoring joint health, strengthening the circulatory system or preventing the spread of cancer.

Anxiety and High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a condition that cuts across all the age groups. It is important not to neglect this condition and one should get help as soon as he or she is diagnosed. It is a symptom of stress and anxiety and should be diagnosed properly since the blood pressure in a normal person can fluctuate during the day due to the effect of stress, anxiety, alcohol intake and the likes. To confirm a case of high blood pressure, persistent elevated readings should be recorded at different times during the day, on different days and in different circumstances. It is a well-established fact that acute stress and anxiety can lead to a momentary increase in blood pressure due to changes in the flow pattern of blood from the heart.Chronic anxiety can lead to prolonged hypertension. Anxiety disorder has been linked with increased risk for hypertension and cardiovascular mortality. Close to seventy percent of all the high blood pressure problems are linked to emotional stress or anxiety during difficult situations. Conversely, higher levels of anxiety have been found in hypertensive subjects. When this phenomenon becomes recurrent, it can lead to long-term permanent damage like heart attacks, kidney failure or liver failure. Also, when one is anxious it is easy to resort to other unhealthy habits like smoking and drinking, which can further aggravate the problem. Hence it is critical that the treatment being administered for controlling high blood pressure should also provide anxiety relief. Here are some tips which can help you manage your condition of high blood pressure and at the same time will help in providing relief from anxiety. One should eat regular meals and avoid stimulants like coffee. Preference should be given to foods that are natural like fruits, whole grains etc. It is also important to exercise regularly. It will help relieve tension and also boost the cardiovascular system. However, it is prudent to consult your doctor before embarking on an exercise regimen. It is equally important to get adequate rest since it will relax the muscles and help in relieving the buildup of stress and anxiety. If nothing works, it is advisable to consult your doctor for medication to address your blood pressure as well as providing relief from anxiety.Since these medications have their side effects, it is wise to evaluate the natural treatments for anxiety relief in consultation with your doctor. This can help you provide complete relief from anxiety, thereby eliminating the root cause of your high blood pressure.
