1- Consistency
The absolute worst way to undermined your effort is to be inconsistent with your affirmation routine.
You see, every activity we start (or every goal we set) is like a seed that we plant. a seed does not produce fruits as soon as it is planted but it needs time to grow: it is the law of sowing and reaping.
If you take the time to observe how things work on earth, you will come to realize that everything is submitted to this law. The time to grow might be different from one seed to another but it always come into play.
Another thing you need to be aware of is that the seed planted must literally die in the ground if it is to produce forth a tree and then fruits. In the same way you might go through rough patches when starting your affirmation routines (doubt, discouragement as to their success) but know that these are signs that change is taking place from your innermost being.
2- Belief
The greatest lesson I've learned about affirmations is that you must choose to believe that what you are saying is true
One of the characteristic of belief - something most of us forget - is that it is not based on our senses (what we see, hear, touch, smell or taste). It would seem irrational (without intellectual foundation or reasoning to explain the "why" behind it) at a time but it is the very nature of a belief: it is not tangible.
The best thing then you could do is to simply CHOOSE to believe what you are saying is true...experience will definitely follow if you keep the thought of your affirmations in your head during the day. I am not suggesting that you exclusively think about them but rather that you should use them as "weapons" to stop any negative thinking that can prevent you from acting as you should to know success.
And there you have it: consistency in your affirmation routine and belief in what you are saying are the missing ingredients that make people say that affirmation do not work.
If you start implementing what is taught above, there is no reason why you won't change your life in the way that you so desire. The law of sowing and reaping always work.
